Abstract

Early childhood education emphasizes the development of literacy and numeracy as fundamental skills; however, learning practices are often less contextual and not fully integrated into meaningful activities related to the environment. This study aims to describe the integration of literacy and numeracy through project-based learning using environmental media, specifically stone grouping activities, in early childhood education. This research employed a qualitative descriptive approach conducted at BA Aisyiyah Sidowayah, involving early childhood learners as subjects. Data were collected through observation, documentation, and field notes during project-based activities such as collecting, grouping, counting, and presenting stones. The data were analyzed descriptively to identify the development of children’s literacy and numeracy skills. The results showed that project-based learning using environmental materials effectively supported the integration of literacy and numeracy, as children demonstrated improvement in classifying objects, counting quantities, understanding size comparison, and expressing ideas verbally. These activities also increased children’s engagement and participation in learning. This study implies that simple environment-based project activities can be effectively implemented to support integrated literacy and numeracy development in early childhood education.
