This statement is based on the COPE (Committee on Publication Ethics) Best Practice Guidelines for Journal Editors.
Journal Publication Ethics Guidelines
The publication of an article in Jurnal KAYAH that has undergone a peer-review process is an essential contribution to the development of a credible and respected body of knowledge in communication and digital media studies. Peer-reviewed articles reflect the quality of the authors’ research and the academic integrity of the institutions supporting them.
All parties involved in publishing — authors, editors, reviewers, and publishers — are expected to uphold high ethical standards.
The Department of Communication Studies, Universitas Annuqayah, as the publisher of Jurnal KAYAH, is committed to safeguarding every stage of the publication process. The journal ensures that advertising, sponsorship, or other commercial revenue does not influence editorial decisions. The Editorial Board is also committed to cooperating with other journals or publishers when necessary to maintain academic integrity.
Duties of Editors
Publication Decision
The Editor-in-Chief of Jurnal KAYAH is responsible for deciding which submitted manuscripts should be published. The decision is based on the recommendations of reviewers and editorial board members.
Editorial decisions are guided by the validity of the work, its originality, and its relevance to the journal’s focus and scope. The journal complies with applicable legal requirements regarding defamation, copyright infringement, plagiarism, and research ethics.
Fair Play (Non-Discrimination)
Editors evaluate manuscripts solely on their intellectual content, without regard to race, gender, sexual orientation, religious belief, ethnic origin, nationality, or political philosophy of the authors.
Confidentiality
Editors and editorial staff must not disclose any information about submitted manuscripts to anyone other than the corresponding author, reviewers, prospective reviewers, editorial advisors, and the publisher.
Disclosure and Conflicts of Interest
Unpublished materials disclosed in submitted manuscripts must not be used in an editor’s own research without the express written consent of the author.
Editors must withdraw from handling manuscripts where conflicts of interest exist.
Duties of Reviewers
Contribution to Editorial Decisions
Jurnal KAYAH uses a double-blind peer review process. Reviewers assist the Editor-in-Chief in making editorial decisions and may help authors improve the quality of their manuscripts.
Promptness
Reviewers should complete their reviews within the agreed timeframe. If a reviewer is unable to complete the review promptly, they must inform the editor immediately so that the manuscript can be reassigned.
Confidentiality
Manuscripts received for review must be treated as confidential documents. Reviewers must not share or discuss the manuscript with others without authorization from the editor.
Objectivity
Reviews should be conducted objectively. Criticism should be constructive and respectful. Reviewers must provide clear justification for their evaluations and recommendations.
Acknowledgment of Sources
Reviewers should identify relevant published work that has not been cited by the authors. They should inform the editor of any substantial similarity or overlap between the manuscript under review and other published works.
Disclosure and Conflicts of Interest
Information obtained during peer review must be kept confidential and not used for personal advantage. Reviewers must decline to review manuscripts in which they have conflicts of interest due to competitive, collaborative, or institutional relationships.
Duties of Authors
Reporting Standards
Authors must present an accurate and objective account of their research. Data must be represented honestly. The manuscript should provide sufficient detail and references to allow replication when applicable.
Fabrication, falsification, or misrepresentation of data constitutes unethical behavior and is unacceptable.
Data Access and Retention
Authors may be required to provide raw data for editorial review and must be prepared to retain data for a reasonable time after publication.
Originality and Plagiarism
Authors must ensure that their work is entirely original. If they have used the work or words of others, appropriate citation must be provided. Manuscripts found to contain plagiarism will be rejected.
Multiple, Redundant, or Concurrent Publication
Authors must not submit the same manuscript to more than one journal simultaneously. Submission to multiple journals concurrently is considered unethical and unacceptable.
Acknowledgment of Sources
Proper acknowledgment of the work of others must always be given. Authors should cite influential publications relevant to their research.
Authorship of the Paper
Authorship should be limited to individuals who have made significant contributions to the research. The corresponding author must ensure that all co-authors have approved the final version of the manuscript and agree to its submission.
Research Involving Human Participants
Research involving human participants must comply with ethical standards, including informed consent and, where applicable, institutional ethical clearance.
If the research involves potentially hazardous procedures, the author must clearly identify these in the manuscript.
Disclosure and Conflicts of Interest
All authors must disclose any financial or other substantive conflicts of interest that may influence the interpretation of their findings. Sources of funding must be clearly stated.
Fundamental Errors in Published Works
If an author discovers significant errors in their published work, they must promptly notify the editor and cooperate in correcting or retracting the article when necessary.
